Ragnar

Ragnar rose from an ordinary farmer to a king. He was one of the first Vikings to sail to the West and start raiding monasteries. He’s a very complicated person that often kept his ideas to himself.

Nevertheless, Ragnar is cunningly smart, curious, and ambitious. But that doesn’t mean he is flawless. He often acts on impulse and carries a great deal of doubt in his heart. He planned his death in a way it would bring his sons Ivar, Bjorn, Ubbe, Hvitserk, and Sigurd together.

Lagertha

Ragnar’s first wife, Lagertha, is the most famous shieldmaiden in the show. She is brave, ferocious, ruthless, and ambitious. She has a great desire to be a ruler and is even briefly a queen of Kattegat. But more than all, she is honorable.

She has long blonde hair that she wears in different styles. After growing old, she retired from public life just to be mistakenly killed by Hvitserk. He was hallucinating and mistaking her for Ivar.

Ivar

Ivar the Boneless is Ragnar’s youngest son. He was born with weak legs that were prone to breaking, hence the nickname Boneless. Ivar has a great deal of respect for his parents, especially Ragnar. He admires him for his famous raids and accomplishments.

Despite his love for his parents, Ivar is a sadistic, angry, bloodthirsty, and violent Viking. He showed his cruelty from a young age when he laughed about Siggy’s death. He’s also an intelligent and proficient tactician. After invading England he developed a “God Complex” that led him to believe he was better than any other Viking.

Bjorn

Bjorn Ironside is the oldest of Ragnar’s sons. Just like his father, he was the king of Kattegat. He’s very respected among Vikings as a great warrior. He kept all of his father’s good qualities and improved on the bad ones. He’s much less impulsive and is even often seen as very philosophical.

He is rarely ever struck in battle earning him the nickname Ironside. However, when that does happen, he takes great pride in his scars. Furthermore, he cares about his appearance and values his tattoos greatly. In season 4, he lived in the wilderness where he killed a bear with only a hatchet and a knife.

Floki

Floki is a boat builder and Ragnar’s closest friend. He’s very eccentric and joyful. His love for Ragnar has no end. When Ragnar started spending more time with Athelstan than him, Floki grew jealous enough to kill him. He’s a very religious person and believes that Christianity is a threat to his Gods.

He doesn’t have a long ax like other Vikings. Instead, Floki prefers a small hatchet and a long knife. He’s respected as a wise individual. He built longships that allowed Ragnar to sail west.

Rollo

Rollo of Normandy is Ragnar’s older brother. He is a fearsome Viking warrior who settled in Normandy by marrying Gisla, the daughter of the emperor Carless II. While he was still in Kattegat, Rollo was often jealous of his brother. He didn’t hesitate to make his love for Lagertha known either.

Ragnar’s limelight led him to make some bad choices. He betrayed his brother multiple times, with the last one being at the Siege of Paris. That was the moment Rollo renounced his Viking culture and beliefs. However, he still believes in the Norse Gods.

Ubbe

Ubbe is Ragnar’s second oldest son and the first son between Ragnar and Aslaug. He is much more compassionate than his brothers. But that doesn’t mean he’s not sharp or assertive. Unlike the rest of the Vikings, Ubbe treats slaves with compassion and kindness.

He's an intelligent and capable leader. Like the rest of Ragnar’s sons, he’s a skilled warrior that hardly ever gets wounded.
