The leader and the brains behind the criminal gang Peaky Blinders is Thomas Shelby. He is a World War I veteran who was decorated for his bravery. Although medals aren’t the only thing he returned from the war with. He came disillusioned and often experiences nightmares.

Tommy is ambitious and wants a better life for his family. Even when that means he has to take risks. He is confident and unwavering in front of problems. One of his many qualities is patience and research of his opponents.

 After the death of his wife Grace, Tommy’s mental health further deteriorates. To keep him sane, he focuses on battling different enemies such as Oswald Mosley. Sadly, he thinks about taking his own life often and can’t see a way to move forward.

Arthur

Even though he’s the eldest son in the family, Arthur acts as a muscle rather than as a leader. He is strong and is often sent to deal with tasks of high importance. Just like Tommy, Arthur served in the World War which left devastating effects on him.

He is quick-tempered and can sometimes completely lose control. He often resorts to alcohol and drugs to deal with his problems. There were many times when he wanted to end his life, but Tommy talked him out of it. He was further helped by his wife, Linda, who tried to keep him sober as much as possible.

John

With Tommy and Arthur, John is one of the most important members of the Peaky Blinders gang. He was married twice and has 7 children. Just like Arthur, he was more of a muscle man than a brain in the organization.

In the conflict between Peaky Blinders and the Changretta family, John was one of the casualties. He was killed on his doorstep by the Italian mafia after not receiving Tommy’s warning in time. 

Even though he’s as ruthless as his brothers, John is more good-humored and enjoys the image of Peaky Blinders.

Polly

Every family needs a backbone, and for the Shelbies that was Polly Gray. While the men were in the war, she was the unofficial leader of the Peaky Blinders. People often come to her to look for advice.

She’s the company's treasurer as well as a certified accountant. She is widely respected and is often seen as Tommy’s right hand. On the other hand, she believed that she can see the spirit and speak to the dead.

Before season 6, actor Helen McCrory who was portraying Polly Gray sadly passed away. This led to the change in the show’s story and she’s one of the victims of the failed assassination of Oswald Mosley. 

Michael

After being taken away as a child, Michael Gray makes his return to the Shelby family upon turning 18. After being presented with the choice, he decided that sedentary life isn’t for him and that he’d rather prefer being a gangster.

His mother, Polly, didn’t want him to be involved in the gang’s business so Tommy used him mainly for legal businesses. He is kind like his mother, but also ruthless if provoked. He’s well-read and educated.

During the Great Depression, he didn’t listen to Thomas’s orders and lost a lot of family money. This was just a start. He thought he should be the gang’s leader and take Tommy’s place. Their relationship further worsened after Polly’s death.

Finn

The youngest of the 4 brothers is Finn. He is not very involved in the family’s business as he is still a child throughout the show. Only in the later seasons do we see him want to participate more.

Unlike his brothers, he has no military experience. He didn’t have to go through many hardships like them either, making him feel weak compared to them. That’s why he often gets himself in trouble trying to prove that he’s worthy of being a Shelby.

Alfie

If there’s one person Tommy can relate to, then it is Alfie Solomons. He is a Jewish gang leader based in London. Portrayed by Tom Hardy, Alfie is one of the most loved characters in the show.

He runs a rum distillery, as well as a jewelling business. He’s very protective of the Jewish community. He doesn’t take things personally and sees everything as a potential business opportunity. 

Even after retiring following the conflict with Tommy where he was shot, Alfie still holds tremendous influence. He even agrees to help Thomas take down Mosley.
