Ginny

Virginia, more often known as Ginny, is one of the main characters in the show. She’s a 16-year-old teenager who recently moved to Wellsbury with her mom Georgia and stepbrother Austin. Due to constant moving, she never had any friends. Upon moving to Welsbury her luck changes. She finds a group of friends she fits with and falls for Marcus.

On the surface, Ginny is a very happy and cheerful person. But that is just a facade she puts on for others. She feels alone and like she doesn’t belong anywhere. Her only escape from this pain is through self-harming. She first admits it to her dad Zion and agrees to go to therapy.

She has more of a friendly relationship with Georgia than a real mother-daughter relationship. Ginny hates that her mom is treating her like a child and doesn’t want to confide in her. The two of them bond closer after Georgia hears Ginny’s poem.

Georgia

Georgia has been married several times, so it’s quite common that her last name changed. However, she also changed her first name from Mary to Georgia. On the surface that may seem like an odd choice, but Georgia had plenty of reasons to do it,

She comes from an abusive home and was also tangled in illegal activities. Changing her name was supposed to give her a new beginning. She accidentally killed her first husband, Anthony Green. However, the murder of Kenny Drexel wasn’t an accident.

Life taught her that she always needs to be careful so she never puts her guard down. She keeps a smile on her face and doesn’t bother anyone with her problems. She tucks them deep inside her and prefers dealing with them on her own.

Georgia is stunningly beautiful. She has long blonde hair and takes great pride in her appearance. She’s always wearing make-up and cute combinations. Nevertheless, her greatest attribute is her unwavering confidence.

Max

Max is Ginny’s best friend and first-door neighbor. She is very social and full of energy. On certain occasions, she comes off as very self-centered. She fails to see that Ginny is struggling with her feelings or the racism that she is receiving from Mr. Gitten in AP English.

At the beginning of the show, Max was very open about her sexuality. She didn’t hide the fact that she is gay from Ginny or anyone else. She was also very open to romantic experiences with others. She didn’t think twice about it. That came to bite her when she first met Sophie and ended up making a fool of herself.

As the show progressed, so did Max’s maturity. The heartbreak she experienced with Sophie taught her a great deal about self-respect. This was shown when Sophie wanted to stay friends, but Max knew that would hurt her more than not having any contact with Sophie at all.

Marcus

In the first season, Marcus is portrayed as a bad boy. Everyone believes he and Palma are casually sleeping together. It came as no surprise when he hooked up with Ginny in just mere days of knowing each other. However, that was when Marcus lost his virginity despite trying to act cool about it.

He grows increasingly jealous of Hunter and his relationship with Ginny. When he confessed his feelings for Ginny and they started dating it seemed like everything was finally working out for him. But one thing was lurking in the shadows - his depression. He didn’t want Ginny to know about it even though he was having a hard time dealing with it. Ultimately, he pushed Ginny away.

Joe

Joe is the owner of the Blue Farm Cafe. He is an extremely caring introvert who goes out of his way to help Georgia and Ginny. He quickly falls for Georgia, but his feelings are not reciprocated. He first met her when she was just a girl, and he gave her vintage Ray-Ban sunglasses.

We don’t know much about his personal life. He has a farm outside of town and plays hockey. He has a thick beard and his hair is always styled. Despite his good looks, he has a hard time dating. That is an understatement. He’s so sick of it that he’s ready to give up.
