What Is a Tetrachromacy Test?

But, if you did perfectly on the examination, nobody batted an eye. What Is Tetrachromacy?

We have all heard about color blindness and how it can affect people. But, if there are conditions that cause deviations in human color perception in a bad way, are there any that may upgrade our color vision?

Tetrachromacy is a condition that allows people to see a wider range of colors. It is a mutation that primarily occurs in women. Simply put, it is the closest to supervision we have.

How Do We See Color?

To better understand what tetrachromacy is, we have to take a look at how people see colors. Our retinas contain millions of rods and cones. Rods are responsible for the detection of light and dark, while cones are responsible for the distinguishment between different colors.

An average human has three cones that help us perceive red, green, and blue shades. In order to have good color vision, we need all three cones to work effectively. If one doesn’t work, we get color blindness. But, in rare cases, some people have 4 cones that allow them to see a wider range of colors.

To better illustrate how drastic the range of color vision may be, let’s put it into numbers. An average person can see about 1 million different hues. A color-blind person may see as few as 10,000 colors. Whereas a tetrachromac may see up to 100 million shades. That’s extraordinary.

Am I Tetrachromatic?

If you notice that you see colors other people aren’t able to spot, perhaps you are one of the few people with this astonishing condition. There are only a few ways you can confirm if you are tetrachromatic or not.

Firstly, you can take our test and see how you fare compared to others. It is important to note that different devices may present different colors in a different manner. Therefore, look at our test as a nudge in the right direction rather than as a definitive answer. If our test indeed says that you are tetrachromatic, it is time for the next step, genetic testing. How Tetrachromats See Colors

As mentioned previously, people with the tetrachromatic condition see many more colors than the rest of us. Visualizing what they see can be hard for others. An artist Concetta Antico described it like this, “I see colors in other colors, other people might just see white light, but I see orange and yellow and pink and green:”

Such a number of colors can be overwhelming for them. Places with tons of colors, like supermarkets and clothes shops, may be especially intense for tetrachromats. On top of that, some tetrachromats may see changes in skin color that are beneficial in detecting health issues.
