The Start Of The War

Humanity entered the 20th century with a global conflict known as The Great War. Following WW2 it became more common to refer to the Great War as World War I. Conflict of such scale has been unprecedented in the past.

At the time, Europe was a powder keg ready to explode. The assassination of Austria-Hungarian archduke Franz Ferdinand was the match that lit it on fire. Austria-Hungary was the first to enter the conflict by declaring war on Serbia. Soon after, their brethren the German Empire followed suit and declared war on Russia and France. The Germans tried to evade French defenses and invade France in the North. The issue is, that they had to invade a neutral country Belgium as well. Consequently, Great Britain entered the war in defense of Belgium. That said, this wouldn’t be a world war until Japan entered it for purely opportunistic reasons. They took control of German possessions in the Pacific that were barely defended.

Trench Warfare

More than 70 million military personnel were mobilized across numerous fronts. The Western Front had seen the most casualties in an exhausting trench warfare. Prior to the Great War, men were proud and looking forward to going to war. For them, it was an adventure they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. However, the unprecedented use of artillery and machine guns made modern was a horror.

Conditions were so horrible soldiers would often lose their minds and become shell-shocked. On top of that trenches were full of diseases. And if that’s not enough they would have to try and break through enemy lines. These attempts were so pointless the term “meatgrinder” was associated with them.

End Of The War

Germany was under a time constraint. The moment the war started, Great Britain blocked off their ability to receive goods, weapons, or anything else. In addition, the Allies had more men and a better economical situation. Germany’s failure to deliver the final blow to France in a timely manner led to their loss in 1918.

Society was shocked by the horrors of WW1 and was determined to make sure it never happened again. Little did they know, the same war was going to repeat just 20 years later.
