Khan’s Childhood

Genghis was a Mongolian nomad born as a son of a clan leader. His birth name is Temujin, he wasn’t known as Genghis until his coronation. His childhood was anything but easy. His father was poisoned by his enemies, and even his people didn’t want him.

He started showcasing his ruthlessnes from a young age. At just 10 years old, with the help of his younger brother, he murdered his older brother for stealing their fish. It was just one of the many lives Genghis and his actions would take throughout his life.

Genghis’s Rise To Power

Eurasian steppe was dominated by horse archers for over a millennia. On top of that, there have been countless attempts at unifying these people. At the time of Gengi’s rise to power, the steppe was in dismay. The tribes were fighting each other more than they fighting their settled neighbors.

He quickly rose the ranks due to his strategic mind and enchanting charisma. He gathered Mongols under his rule and beat all the rival tribes. He was proclaimed Khan of the Mongols in 1206. That marked the start of the Mongol Empire, the biggest empire in history. Soon after, he began incorporating other tribes under his rule. Meaning, you either join the Mongol empire or face destruction.

Destruction Of China And the Muslim World

Genghis Khan believed every title and right has to be earned. Therefore, his army and empire were built entirely on merit. Such a setup ensured an unprecedented level of loyalty and competency. With a devastating war machine under his belt, he attacked China, quickly overpowering the Western Xia and the Jin Dynasty.

He attacked the Khwarazmian Empire after an incident revolving around trade. His caravans were seized and stolen by a governor of the Khwarazmian town of Ortar. The destruction of the Khwarazmian Empire has been so devastating that many historians believe that the Muslim world never recovered from the damage it caused them.

Death

There are many uncertainties about Genghis Khan. Historians don’t know what he looked like, the exact year he was born, or how he died. Moreover, they don’t even know where he is buried. Yet, the decisions he made during his lifetime still affect us today.

Most empires collapse with the death of their leader. Genghis didn’t want that to happen to his Mongols. With the support of his sons, he appointed Ogedei as his successor.
