What Is ‘Cisgender’?

Cisgender, or cis for short, is a term that describes people whose gender aligns with the sex assigned at their birth. The term ‘cisgender’ first appeared in 1994 in a post to the Usenet newsgroup alt.transgendered according to Historians.

The prefix ‘cis’ comes from Latin meaning “on this side”. Thus, a cisgender person has a gender that is on the same side as the sex they were assigned at birth. This is true for roughly 99% of the population according to the following statistics.

There’s a misconception that cisgender people are strictly straight. A person’s gender doesn’t affect their sexuality. Regardless if someone is cis, trans, nonbinary, or agender, they can be of various sexualities. If that’s what you are interested in, we have a complete sexuality quiz on this page.

Cisgender vs Transgender

The term ‘cisgender’ is equal to the term ‘transgender’. The latter is much more known despite only ~1% of the U.S. adult population identifying as trans. Let’s take a look at the differences between these two gender identities.

In contrast to cis, the prefix ‘trans’ means “on the other side of” in Latin. Therefore, a trans person’s gender is on the other side from the sex they were assigned at birth. Both cisgender and transgender are typically put under the binary umbrella.

But, that doesn’t mean you have to identify as one of them. Some people’s gender doesn’t fit within the binary system while others reject the concept of gender entirely.

Cisgender vs Nonbinary

As mentioned earlier, cisgender relates to the binary identities, of male and female. In contrast, nonbinary people’s gender doesn’t fit within these two identities. Some see their gender between the two, while others see their gender entirely outside of the binary genders.

Therefore, the majority of nonbinary people do not identify as cisgender. Moreover, that doesn’t automatically make them transgender either. They can identify as bigender, genderfluid, agender, or something else entirely. It entirely depends on the individual and what they resonate with.

How Can I Know If I Am Cisgender?

There isn't a foolproof way of knowing if cisgender or any other identity is right for us. It completely depends on a person and how they resonate with different identities. However, there are a few things you can do to see if you are cisgender.

Firstly, ask yourself "Does my gender align with my sex"? If yes, there's a high chance you are cisgender. However, you could also be nonbinary. Or, if your gender does not align with your sex, you could be trans, or something else.

As you can see, it can get complicated very fast. That's where our cisgender quiz comes in. It will help you understand if you are cisgender or not. Furthermore, if the result says you are not cisgender, we have plenty of other quizzes you can try to find your true gender identity.
