What Are Dom/Sub Relationships?

A dom/sub relationship is one of the most common ways people who are interested in BDSM engage with each other. As per the Cambridge Dictionary, BDSM stands for bondage, discipline (dominance), sadism (submission), and masochism. The letters we will be paying attention to are the “DS” in the acronym.

In this type of relationship, partners have clearly defined roles. Think of it like this, a dom/sub relationship is a consensual, eroticized exchange of power. The dominant person acts or does things to the submissive person. Dom-sub relationships are often referred to when discussing sexual experiences. However, they can work for pretty much anything partners want.

Such relationships can get complicated quickly. It is paramount for both partners to express their concerns and set boundaries to what they are comfortable with. Moreover, power inequality is not the permanent state between the partners. It happens in the controlled environment that both dom and sub consensually agree on.

Lastly, there are many scenarios or scenes of the dom-sub relationships. Although the dom and sub roles are predefined, their behavior changes throughout different situations. Some of the scenarios are master and servant, d/s lovers, caregiver/little, female-led relationships, and so on.

What Does Dom Stand For?

Dom, short for dominant, has the role of controlling the submissive person. A dominant person leads, guides, and enforces their will on the submissive partner. On top of that, it is their responsibility to keep the submissive person safe throughout the activity. They make sure that the boundaries are clear and respected.

Additionally, a dom’s behavior can change based on the scenario they are involved in. For instance, in the caregiver/little scenario, dom will be gentle and nurturing. On the other hand, in the master/servant scenario, dom has complete control over the sub.

What Does Sub Stand For?

A sub, short for submissive, is a person who desires to be in control of the other person. They consensually agree to surrender to the guidance, direction, and leadership of the dominant person. Surrendering to another person requires a lot of trust. Setting clear boundaries, limits, and safe words is incredibly important. Even though that dom is in the control of a sub, the sub always has the option to end the scene.

Sub’s behavior can change drastically depending on the scene the partners are exploring. But, one thing remains constant. The sub is always giving their power to the dom.
