Where Did Misanthropy Come From?

Now, this is a great question. Like many other things in history, the term Misanthropy traces its roots back to Greece.

When two Greek words, 'mîsos' and 'anthropos,' thought it was a good idea to unite, they gave us 'misanthropos,' which translates into man's hatred.

Who Are Misanthropes?

There's one thing that all misanthropes have in common: A shared contempt for human flaws. So much so that they've even categorized the various human flaws. Jeez. Spiritual flaws, aesthetic flaws, moral flaws, intellectual flaws- misanthropes can't stand any of them.

Depending on how they perceive human flaws, misanthropes can adopt different attitudes. Their disgust can drive some misanthropes into destructive behavior. Alternatively, a few misanthropes might shut themselves out from the outside world completely.

Some misanthropes throw themselves into activism, hoping that they can rid the world of all its flaws.

Different Kinds of Misanthropes

When an individual or a community begins to nurture intense hatred for a specific thing, person, or group, their Misanthropy cannot be generalized. Take a look at the different manifestations that Misanthropy can have:

Racists

Racists are misanthropes whose disgust and contempt are reserved for a specific racial group. This stems from their belief that the group in question is more fallible than the others.

Misogynists

Misanthropes who treat women with disgust and contempt, and believe that men should always control them, are the Misogynists. They tend to uphold the values of Sexism.

Misandrists

Misandrists are those who hold extreme prejudices against men and boys. They tend to belittle, mock and exclude men while obsessing over their flaws.
