What Is Genderqueer?

Growing up, most people were taught that there are two genders, male and female. But, the question of genders isn’t that black and white. Instead, genders are a spectrum with men at one end and females at the other. The middle is reserved for various gender identities, one of which is genderqueer.

Genderqueer is an umbrella term used by people who don’t follow the traditional binary gender norms. That means there are a bunch of gender identities that fall under it. Moreover, it is very similar to the non-binary umbrella. We will be discussing the difference between the two further along in the post.

Before the 1990s and the queer movement, the word queer was used as an anti-gay slur. It was redefined into the term of empowerment that confronts heteronormativity. In a similar way, genderqueer became a gender identity used by folks who reject the notion that there are only two genders.

Am I Genderqueer Or Nonbinary?

Genderqueer and nonbinary both reject the idea of the gender binary. There are more similarities than differences between the two. Therefore, some people use the two terms interchangeably.

The term “queer” is often associated with nonheterosexual sexualities, so combining it with gender creates a gender identity that refers to non-cisgender identities. In the end, it depends on the individual to choose which gender identity they are more comfortable with.
