What Is Bulking?

Bulking is a bodybuilding strategy in which an individual eats in a caloric surplus. A caloric surplus is eating more than your body requires. It is most often combined with intense resistance training with the goal of gaining muscle mass and size. There are two types of bulking, dirty bulking, and clean bulking.

Dirty bulking allows you to gain weight faster, at the expense of gaining more fat. On the other hand, clean bulking minimizes the amount of fat you gain during the bulking phase.

What Is Cutting?

Cutting is a period in bodybuilding where you eat with a slight caloric deficit. A caloric deficit is a term used to describe a diet plan in which you eat less than your body normally needs to maintain weight. The goal is to lose body fat while maintaining muscle mass.

It usually follows a bulking phase. It can also be recommended to beginners who are starting with higher body fat than desired.

Should I Cut, or Bulk?

The most important part when determining whether you should cut or bulk is your body fat. Men with body fat higher than 20%, or women above 25% are always recommended to go on a cut.

Determining body fat can be hard without access to a nutritionist. The home scales can be wrong for up to 34%, and calculators have no actual way of knowing it. As a last resort, you can compare your body type to other people’s using guides online to find an estimate of your body fat. If you want to skip this part, you can take our cut or bulk quiz and get an answer in just mere minutes.

Secondly, you have to take a look at your goals. If you want to increase your overall size and muscle mass consider bulking. Keep in mind that your body fat must be in adequate range for it. Bulking will also allow you to lift heavier due to the extra energy and nutrients you will be receiving in the caloric surplus.

However, if you want to define and tone your physique, it’s time for a cutting phase. Going on a slight caloric deficit will help you reduce body fat. It’s important to note that you won’t be able to lift as much as you were while bulking. But, that doesn’t mean you should stop it. Staying consistent is detrimental to keeping your muscle gains.

Common Mistakes With Bulking and Cutting

Achieving your desired physique doesn’t happen overnight. Yet, many people measure their weight daily and often get disappointed by the results. Scale can be a big liar. It can fluctuate your weight by a couple of pounds due to water retention, bowel patterns, etc.

Also, people tend to get frustrated when they can’t lift as much when switching from a bulk to a cut. It can lead to improper form and ultimately injuries. Make sure to adjust your lifts and the program to accommodate your new diet plan.

Lastly, if you are in a bulk, don’t overeat! This will lead to gaining more fat than expected and prolonging your cutting phase. If you want meal ideas make sure to check what should I eat quiz.
