He was born in a sport family as a youngest son of LaVar Ball. LaVar briefly played college basketball before becoming a football player. With almost no playing time during his short stint in the sport due to his poor performances, Lavar never got to see the big stage. Shortly afterwards he got injured and his sport career ended there. One could say his biggest achievement is having 3 sons playing basketball at an NBA level. LaMelo is the youngest of the 3 between Lonzo and LiAngelo. With the Facebook Watch show Ball in the Family, he was surrounded by cameras from an early age. In high school he was briefly homeschooled because of the feud with the current coach. Having an agent and his own shoe deal (Big Baller Brand) caused him a lot of controversy when it came to college basketball. Big colleges didn't want to take a risk on him and get bad publicity. Ultimately, he opted to play overseas. First he was in Lithuania with his brother LiAngelo, from where he signed with Illawarra Hawks in National Basketball League, Australia. In the 2020 NBA draft he was a 3rd overall pick. He was selected by Charlotte Hornets who he would lead into a playoff picture. Sadly, they fell short in the NBA Play-In tournament.
