Professional Playing Career

Klopp was a professional player before becoming a manager. He played in the second Bundesliga division for Mainz 05 for over a decade. His attitude and commitment to the team made him a fan favorite. He spent the first part of his playing career as a striker while transitioning to the defense in the latter part of it.

He scored 52 goals in 325 appearances for Mainz 05. He retired from playing in 2001. In one interview, he confessed he felt he was more suited for a managerial role than a playing one. According to him, he had the feet of a fourth-division player, and the head of a first-division one.

Becoming A Coach

Upon retiring from professional play, he took the reins of his former club. After several years of being just 1 place shy of promotion, he led Mainz to the Bundesliga promotion in the 2003-04 season. Mainz had the smallest budget in the league, yet his stellar tactics led the club to the 11th-place finish in their first Bundesliga season.

During his tenure at Mainz, the team got relegated back to the 2nd division. However, his accomplishments put him on the radar of the big clubs, ultimately landing him at Borussia Dortmund in 2008.

Borussia Dortmund Stint

In the first year of leading Dortmund, the team improved to the 6th place finish from the 14th place the year prior. It would take just two years for him to settle at the club and lead it to the Bundesliga title. His success over the years solidified his status as one of the best football managers in the world.

Over the 10 years he spent on the Borussia Dortmund bench, Klopp won 2 Bundesliga titles, 2 German Super Cups, German Cup, and finished second in the UEFA Champions League.

Joining Liverpool

After years of mediocrity, Liverpool’s co-owner John W. Henry decided to use a mathematical method to find a perfect coach and the players. That coach ended up being Jurgen Klopp. He joined the club in 2015 and led them to a Champions League title in the 2018-19 season. That same year, they finished second in the Premier League with a near record-breaking 97 points. The following year they finished first.

During his time with Liverpool, Klopp has been selected World’s Best Club Coach twice, in the 18-19 and 19-20 seasons. He also won the Fifa Club World Cup, English FA Cup, English League Cup, and English Super Cup.
