HOI4 is a grand strategy wargame that revolves around World War II. The game allows players to pick any nation and help them win against other countries. HOI4 has different ideologies representing different political beliefs or alignments in the selected country or nation. An ideology helps determine the choice that the nation will make.

Different Ideologies

Each country belongs to one of the four political ideologies that are subject to change with time

Democracy - In this ideology, a popular vote governs the nation’s direction. There are three types of democracy that a country can have: conservatism, liberalism, or socialism. 

Communism - If you want social equality this is the ideology for you. Countries can deploy different types of communism. It is mainly, marxism, leninism, stalinism, anti-revisionism and anarchist communism. 

Fascism - If you enjoy playing with Axis powers then you already know everything about this ideology. It focuses the entire nation on extreme nationalism. The most popular types are fascism and nazism. 

Non-Aligned - Lastly we have non-aligned nations for any other ideology. Most of the game’s countries are members of this ideology.

Major vs Minor Countries

The game has a mix of major and minor countries. The game decides the status of the country based on the factory count. So, a country with at least 35 factories is considered a major country. The game has a total of 233 countries, out of which 83 are presented at the beginning and only 7 of them are considered major countries. Read on to learn more about them.

Germany 

Players have the opportunity to select the German Reich as their nation. If you pick it as your country, the game will let you look back at German history and give you a chance to understand the historical path. Germany has three national spirits: General Staff, Bitter Losers, and MEFO Bills. 

Since Germany is a fascist country, its players have greater freedom. Germany can be a challenging nation to choose because the country has a limited amount of resources at the beginning of the game. 

Japan 

Japan is one of the major powers and has a distinctive national focus tree. The country's focus tree is divided into 7 branches that describe the characteristics of the country.

In 1926, Japan had seasoned and green troops to fight its enemies. The country’s resources and troops increased from 1936 to 1936, making it powerful enough to fight multiple countries later during the war. 

United States 

The USA has a lot of resources and infrastructure assets in the game. However, the country cannot operate and fight at its optimum because of the restrictions put by the law. 

The US has the second-largest navy in the world, giving them an edge over its opponents. However, it lags behind when it comes to the army and air force due to a shortage of manpower and equipment. 

Soviet Union 

Soviet Union is one of the strongest countries in HOI4. It is a leader of the Comintern faction and enjoys an abundance of natural and human resources. The Soviet Union has decent technology compared to other players, so it can plan and fight better in the game. 

The Soviet Union controls almost all of northern Asia and the eastern side of Europe. The country doesn't want to let go of its powers and uses its controlling hat the entire time.

United Kingdom 

The United Kingdom is another major player in the game because of the huge number of factories and technological disruption. In the game, the UK starts as a democracy with elections every four years. Surprisingly, the country has no national focus so it can change ideologies. 

The country has a sizable air force, which makes it strong. The country has a decent amount of human resources at the beginning but maintaining this level of manpower gets tough as the game proceeds.
